FLINT, MI — Michigan State Police, the Flint Police Department, Crime Stoppers of Flint and Genesee County and community partners and volunteers went door-to-door in Flint Thursday in a united effort to find information about a double homicide over the weekend.
The new Flint Safe Neighborhoods Initiative launched Thursday, June 10, with a canvassing effort to find information on the Sunday, June 6, killing of 28-year-old Jarelle Stewart and 33-year-old Samantha Stewart, who were cousins.
A third person, a 28-year-old woman, was also critically injured in the shooting incident that took place as the trio left a block party around 3 a.m. Sunday in the 900 block of East York Avenue near Industrial Avenue.
In addition to connecting with residents, the Flint Safe Neighborhoods Initiative is working to provide information and resources on how to report crimes anonymously, said Julie Lopez, regional director for Crime Stoppers.
Crime Stoppers provided door hangers to hang at residences with contact information for tips.
There will be other canvassing events held in the future, Lopez said.
“It’s really about building relationships also,” Lopez said. “There’s a lot involved in the purpose of the initiative. It is solving cases and then you get the additional positive relationship building.”
The Flint Safe Neighborhood Initiative was developed to encourage communication and cooperation between the police and public, Michigan State Police said in a statement.
“The goal of this initiative is to build trust between police and public, to work together and solve violent crime,” the statement reads. “Many times, neighbors are afraid to speak with police, especially in the middle of the night immediately following a violent crime nearby.
“By contacting community members in the light of day, alongside their neighbors, investigators hope to bridge that gap and build better communities together by holding violent criminals accountable.”
Anonymous tips may be sent by phone to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-JAIL (5245), online at CrimeStoppersofFlint.com, or via the P3Tips mobile app.
