DEERFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI — A 44-year-old Columbiaville man died in a crash Sunday when his side-by-side UTV left a Lapeer County roadway and flipped multiple times, according to police.

Deputies with the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched at 8:05 p.m. Sunday, May 23, to a crash on Skelton Road south of Columbiaville Road in Deerfield Township, a little less than 10 miles north of Lapeer.

A 2014 Polaris 800 Razor, driven by 44-year-old Richard McLaren Jr. of Columbiaville, was headed south on Skelton Road when it went off the right side of the roadway, according to a Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office news release.

The UTV’s right side tires entered a ditch while the left side remained on the road.

When McLaren attempted to maneuver the UTV back onto the roadway, the vehicle overturned and rolled multiple times before it came to a rest on its roof, police said.

McLaren was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was wearing a seat belt.

A 42-year-old male passenger from Goodrich was not injured in the crash and declined medical treatment, police said.

Police are waiting on a toxicology report to determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

Skelton Road was closed for several hours for rescue and investigation.

The Deerfield Township Fire Department, Lapeer County EMS Ambulance Service, and the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Division assisted deputies at the scene.

Anyone with information about the fatal crash is asked to contact Lapeer County Detective Sgt. Jason Parks at 810-656-1015 or jparks@lapeercounty.org.
